New Ext 2.0 Documentation
November 1, 2007 by Brian Moeskau
The Ext Team has been hard at work creating documentation for the 2.0 release. We now have several documents for new and existing Ext users that should come in very handy during the transition to 2.0.
Introduction to Ext
If you are brand new to Ext, you should start with our original tutorial, the Introduction to Ext. This tutorial was created for the original 1.0 release, but has been newly updated for 2.0. This is a great place to start if you’ve never written any code in Ext.
Ext 2.0 Overview
The Ext 2.0 Overview is primarily intended for those with some prior experience with Ext, as it dives into some advanced topics. However, it is a great place to start for anyone just getting their feet wet with 2.0. This overview provides an introduction to all of the major new areas within 2.0 including:
- The new Component Model that underlies all major components
- The new Container and Layout Models that provide the visual and structural framework for Ext
- Updates and new features for the Grid component
- The new XTemplate and DataView classes for template processing and data-bound UIs
Ext 1.x to 2.0 Migration Guide
Existing 1.x users should be happy to see the 1.x to 2.0 Migration Guide. Unfortunately, with changes of the magnitude made in 2.0, it was not possible to maintain complete backwards compatibility to 1.x. However, we have taken great pains to ensure that the upgrade path is as seamless as possible. This guide provides an extremely detailed overview of every breaking change between 1.x and 2.0, including comprehensive explanations of how and why each area changed. It also includes detailed API comparisons between classes when appropriate.
API Documentation
The developer API documentation has been fully updated for 2.0 as well. Along with the newly-designed doc center, it’s now easier than ever to find the help you’re looking for.
2.0 Final Release Coming Soon!
Ext 2.0 is available for download and code updates are available to SVN subscribers in the Ext SVN under branches/ext2.0. The final release for 2.0 is currently scheduled for November 15th.
Just a reminder: during the 2.0 pre-release period we are offering a 25% discount on all commercial license purchases. If you were considering a commercial license, now is the time!

One of the best things that happened in my entire programming career of 18 years - my intro to ExtJS! An Excellent framework with an extensive documentation is pure blessing! Widgets are just excellent, support is great and what else could we ask!!! Keep up the great work.

Cheers.

Hi,
Could you please include in your documentation pages, small snippets of examples of usage of various components? Otherwise, this is a great framework which I think will change the manner the web is regarded.
Also - it would be great if an application could be developed which allows programmers to write down the component, and (just like in delphi), the properties and methods would appear as a drop-down menu! I know it is asking much, but what a difference this would make
You guys need to be given the “Nobel” prize of the Web

I agree with Mihai for samples for each component. The documentation is excellent but sometimes doing through the reference will be very hard.
Thanks for the excellent work.

i would be happy to write some examples in the documentation, maybe i can write them in an email or in the wiki
and again i would be very very happy to do this

Samples for XTemplate especially for me. In the Ext 2.0 Overview, it says ‘for complete details and usage examples, please see the XTemplate API docs’, but the documentation is minimal and the examples are non-existent.
But I must agree, Ext is just about the best thing to happen to web development since PHP. I started using Ext back in the early days of YUI-Ext and it has changed the way I develop completely.
Can’t wait for the full 2.0 release

@knagurski - Those examples have been updated in SVN for some time, but the public docs had not been regenerated yet. Please have another look at XTemplate now.

@Brian Moeskau - Thank you so much for getting them updated. The power of XTemplate in relation to the project I am doing right now is astounding. This is going to save me days and days of extra work.

good job once again guys!

Very excited for this. I’ve been using beta 2.0 for a while. It’s amazing how little I have to do to get such impressive effects.

So when do you expect Ext 2.0 to be in general release? thx

Hi - what are you using to generate the api docs? I’ve been looking into javascript documentation tools and saw comments similar to jsDoc tags but not quite. Are you using your own tool, or is this a third party tool that’s available? thanks!

chailatte: they have their own tool, and there’s already been drooling about it.

Ext Js is the new generation UI platform in the web. It gives you a feel like you are browsing your desktop application.

I am really excited and looking forward for the production release 2.0

Great job. I look forward for Ext 2,0 release

Ext is great and I’m looking forward using it in a real project soon.
There is a little problem with the examples from the last release (rc1) zip.
The file /ext-2.0-rc1/examples/desktop/js/desktop.js must be Desktop.js (capital D) in order the example to work with case sensitive file systems (linux here).
Sorry for reporting this here, but I can’t find the right place.

Fabulous framework and improved documentation.
The only thing I would like to see added is some contents index. Sometimes when looking into examples, I’d like to know the base class for some method or property. Also people quite often remember property or method names and forgot the class it belongs to.
Things where a contents index could be of great help.

oh,I’m looking forward the final release

One of the greatest JavaScript frameworks ever! Bravissimi!
Just one weak point: API documentation is excellent, but tutorials are not.
This is HUGE framework with its own syntax: mastering this syntax from the API takes
forever, and tutorials are just basic. I’m crawling my way up by tweaking the demos,
but for the complex application I’m writing (with svg clickable maps) this is taking just
too much time…
Thanks for your efforts.

It takes a lot of work to get your head around the whole framework and use it properly, but once you do… whooo boy!
I’m giddy with power.
