Ext JS at The Ajax Experience

September 15, 2008 by Aaron Conran

Come join Jack Slocum and I for two developer focused sessions, “Hands On Ext” and “Advanced CSS and Theming of Ext JS” at The Ajax Experience at the end of this month. Feel free to follow along with your laptop or watch as we build an application and demonstrate how to create a custom theme in each hour long session. The Ajax Experience is a three day conference with many interesting sessions on Ajax, Web 2.0 technologies and JavaScript frameworks targeted at developers. This year’s conference will be held in Boston, MA from September 29th to October 1st. Registration is still open and we are hoping to see you there!

Session: Hands on Ext

Speaker: Aaron Conran
Duration: 1 hour
Hands On Ext will be a fast-paced session in which we will build an Ext application in less than an hour. This session will demonstrate how to get started using Ext JS and show how quickly you can put together a simple application from scratch. Learn how to utilize Ext’s high-level UI widgets like GridPanel, TabPanel and FormPanel instead of re-inventing the wheel.

Session: Advanced CSS And Theming of Ext

Speaker: Jack Slocum
Duration: 1 hour
Join Jack as he demonstrates how to manipulate the look and feel of Ext to integrate seamlessly with your application or company’s style guide. As you probably know, all Ext widgets can be transformed to look radically different simply by adding an additional CSS theme file. Learn how to create a custom theme for your Ext application step by step in this hands-on demonstration.

Meet Up

Jack and I are hoping to meet with members of the Ext community to discuss our plans and the future of Ext. We’d also like to find out more about what you guys are creating with Ext. We are planning on having a meet-up after the conference on the 2nd day (Sept. 29th). If you’d like to meetup please send your contact information to meetup@extjs.com. Feel free to suggest a location if you know of a good spot to meet.

We’re Growing

Ext is a growing company and we are looking for talented developers to join our team. Please take a look at jobs.extjs.com if you have the skill set, drive and desire to join our team and grow with us. If you will be at The Ajax Experience, make an additional note so that we can be sure to meet you. The Ajax Experience should be a very exciting conference with many different frameworks and technologies represented. Please be sure to stop by our sessions and the meet-up if you are already an Ext developer or want to know more about Ext. Finally, we’d like to thank the Ajaxians for inviting us to present at The Ajax Experience.

Good times. I’m glad ExtJS will be present. I’m looking forward to it!

  2. Noam

When you will support RTL (right-to-left)?!

  3. Derick S

Be great to meet you guys in person.

  4. PieturP

Too bad I’m not going to be able to visit this great looking conference. For me, the US still isn’t next door…

It would be great however if some of the sheets or abstracts of the aforementioned sessions could be made publicly available afterwards.

Is there any chance on that?

  5. Frank

Great News! Will anyone take a video for this event?

  6. Mango Lier

It would be great if you can publish the slides from your sessions so all can benefit from them.

  7. Bodom78

I would love to see some slides, videos from your sessions as well. I would love to attend but it’s quite a hike from Australia :/

  8. Costin

I second PieturP’s thoughts: if it’s possible, please post some materials after the conference ;) Peace

  9. Rich Waters

Wish I could make it this year, will be the the first TAE I’ve missed out of the past five :(. Glad we got two presentations this year and managed to convince Jack to give one of them ;).

  10. Justin Akehurst

I would love to see some materials and a HOWTO on how to build a theme for Ext 2.2

  11. Boah

Cool. I hope you/they publish a video of the demo. I love to see how to create my own layout in an easy way.

    To Michelle:
There is a job system right here that you can publish the job:

  14. Richard Hill

Please, please video tape the session, add in the slide deck and sell the whole thing as a webinar! or publish the slides.

Or better yet, send me the unedited video and the slide deck and I’ll edit it all together and make DVDs

  15. Ryan Thrash

Would really really really very much appreciate being able to get a video/slides of the theming of Ext for modx. Please!

  16. Kavih WIlliams

Everyone (pretty much) has already asked for a video recorded session, so here is my vote for that as well. I’m on the west coast and can’t make the flight over there.

  17. Iveco

It would be very nice if it would be possible to put the slides online afterwards or if someone is going to record the sessions make the videos public. That would be really nice and everyone can learn from it.

    Thank you very much.

    I love ExtJS :)

  18. Jay Garcia

    Photos!! :)

  19. Aaron Conran

Thank you to everyone who was able to come out and join Jack and I for our sessions!

There were no slides for either of our presentations, we both took a more hands-on approach and actually did development during the sessions instead of pre-canned slides. Both sessions were recorded and will be available on Adobe TV.

I will be putting together another blog post detailing the talks, the code/css that was generated and the tools that Jack and I use for development.

We’d love to hear any additional comments that you may have if you attended the sessions.

  20. Claude

it was great seeing you guys. Keep up the great work.

  21. Ryan Thrash

Glad to hear it’s going on Adobe TV … any word on when it might be up there?

  22. Aaron Conran

Ryan, I haven’t heard anything yet, have been searching each day though :-/ I’ll be putting up the blog entry as soon as the video is up

  23. MarkusW

Aaron, did you already have the time for putting together some info on your sessions at Adobe TV? Thanks! Markus

  24. Vishal G

TAE sent out an email to all attendees saying we will be email first when the videos are available online for viewing. I will keep an eye out for that.

  25. Ryan Thrash

Hey Aaron, out of curiosity why not upload to Vimeo? It’s free and even supports HD resolution screencasts.

We recently did this for a test with the upcoming package building for modx and the results are really nice. Just takes a little while to upload and convert (video files get big fast), then it’s hosted and free for the world to peruse. No affiliation, just a satisfied user.

Hint: for optimal HD-res viewing, click full screen on then click the little button that says “scaling is on” (to turn it off). This makes any text most readable to my eyes. Sample here: http://vimeo.com/modx/

  26. Ryan Thrash

Still nothing on Adobe TV? I’m itching to see the the presentation as it’s really important to the modx project to tweak some things and a few pointers would be greatly appreciated above and beyond adjusting the hues on the existing images. :)

  27. Aaron Conran

Still nothing to see on Adobe TV. :-( I’m actually a tad disappointed as I’d love to see how my presentation went. Unfortunately, we don’t have a copy of the video so this is just up to Ajaxian/TechTarget to get the presentations up on the web. Both Jack and I signed the necessary release forms.
